Abstract: Chapter of Pediatric Rehabilitation
reviews and summarizes the diagnostic evaluation, natural
history and impairment profiles, and rehabilitation management
of childhood neuromuscular diseases. Diagnostic evaluation
includes information about the recent course of the chief
complaint, family history, physical examination,serum laboratory
studies, electrodiagnostic studies, molecular genetic studies,
muscle biopsy evaluation (techniques and site selection),
histology/histochemistry, immunoblotting, immunostaining,
electron microscopy, metabolic studies, and nerve biopsy.
Specific neuromuscular diseases include dystrophic myopathies,
congenital myopathies, myotonic disorders, neuromuscular junction
disorders, peripheral nerve disorders, motor neuron disorders,
and spinocerebellar degeneration diseases. Disease management
is reviewed and considers exercise, limb contractures and
deformity management,orthotics and surgery, management of
spinal deformity, the provision of functional mobility, pulmonary
management, nutritional management weight reduction, cardiac
complications and pharmacologic interventions (206 references).
